Japanese dolls exhibition takes residence at Muzium Negara

Experience the rich cultural heritage of Japan at the NINGYŌ: Art and Beauty of Japanese Dolls exhibition, now open at National Museum of Malaysia.

The National Museum of Malaysia is poised to host a captivating exhibition showcasing the exquisite beauty and profound cultural significance of Japanese dolls. Titled “NINGYŌ: Art and Beauty of Japanese Dolls,” this exhibition is set to immerse visitors in the rich history and diverse artistry of Japanese doll-making traditions.

The exhibition promises an enlightening journey through centuries of Japanese culture, offering insights into the role of dolls in Japanese society from the seventh century to the present day. Visitors will have the opportunity to explore a wide array of dolls from various regions of Japan, each representing unique customs, aspirations, and regional attributes.

“Ningyō,” the Japanese term for dolls, embodies the essence of human shape and holds a deep-rooted cultural significance in Japanese society. With a total of 67 carefully selected dolls curated into four distinct sections, the exhibition aims to shed light on different aspects of doll culture: “Ningyō to pray for children’s growth,” “Ningyō as fine art,” “Ningyō as folk art,” and “Spread of Ningyō culture.”
