The 2024 edition of the Malaysia Laughing Championship took place online this year, with eight hilarious Malaysians vying for the coveted title.
Organised by the Johor Bahru Happy & Joyous Club, the virtual competition served as a stepping stone to the World Laughing Championship on June 1st.
Eight champions battle of cheer
Open to all Malaysians over 18, the competition wasn’t just about the loudest laugh. Contestants were judged on a unique set of criteria that went beyond mere amusement:
- Humility: A champion’s laughter should uplift, not belittle.
- Joyfulness: Genuine joy is contagious, making laughter even more infectious.
- Sparkle: A captivating stage presence adds another dimension to the laughter experience.
- Contagiousness: The ability to spread laughter like wildfire is a key quality.
- Originality: A unique and creative approach to laughter sets champions apart.
Eight finalists, selected for the laughter videos submitted during registration, faced a series of online challenges designed to test their comedic prowess.
Through three elimination rounds, the competition narrowed down to two finalists: Catherine Lim and Jayamalar.
These champions battled it out with a variety of prompts, including “Your Personal Best Laughter,” “One Animal Laughter,” and “Shy Laughter & In the Playground Laughter.”
Laughter for all: Global audience tunes in
Despite the virtual format, the competition attracted a global audience.
Spectators from over 12 countries, including Belgium, Austria, India, Germany, USA, Japan, and Australia, tuned in to witness the laughter unfold.
This international viewership highlights the universality of laughter – a language that transcends borders and unites people in joy.
The Malaysia Laughing Championship may be over, but the quest for laughter continues.
