KLFW 2024: Spotlight on emerging talents and sustainable fashion

KLFW 2024, featuring over 50 designers, debuts at Suria KLCC from July 29-August 4, spotlighting innovative fashion, batik artistry, and sustainable designs.

The Kuala Lumpur Fashion Week (KLFW) returns for its 12th edition with a captivating partnership involving the city’s iconic shopping destination, Suria KLCC, and KLCC (Holdings) Sdn Bhd. From 29th July to 4th August 2024, KLFW will be held against the backdrop of the picturesque Petronas Twin Towers, transforming Suria KLCC’s Esplanade in KLCC Park into a dedicated fashion hub. This year’s event will be housed in a 12,000 sq ft purpose-built structure, featuring the main show hall, runways, and various activation spaces, accommodating up to 500 guests per show.

In a significant first for KLFW, the monochrome structure will include a large LED screen panel to livestream the runway shows, allowing public access to the glitz and glamour of Malaysia’s premier fashion event.

A Melting Pot of Fashion Diversity

KLFW 2024 promises a celebration of diversity and innovation in fashion. Attendees can expect an eclectic mix of contemporary designs that push the boundaries of fashion, bold deconstructed pieces that challenge traditional norms, sophisticated streetwear, and hybrid designs blending comfort with high fashion. This year’s event will feature over 50 designers and brands, showcasing their ready-to-wear collections.

Making their much-anticipated debuts at KLFW 2024 are labels such as Akudesign, Corak, Ghostboy, LARNEY, SHALS, and Tact, all of whom have carved out significant followings among the digitally-savvy fashion crowd. Joining these new entrants is veteran bespoke creator Fuzana Mokhtaza, who will share the runway with local fashion powerhouses Rizman Ruzaini, Fiziwoo, Nurita Harith, and Alia Bastamam.

Highlighting Tradition and Sustainability

KLFW 2024 will also honor traditional craftsmanship through the “Fashion Forward Batik Malaysia” show slot, spotlighting the artistry of batik with Kelantan-based brand Ruzz Gahara. This segment is a testament to KLFW’s commitment to blending modern fashion with traditional techniques, celebrating Malaysia’s rich cultural heritage.

Sustainability takes center stage in this year’s “Design To Sustain” segment, driven by the allure of the newly-launched PEUGEOT 408. This segment will feature the fifteen finalists of the KLFW Designer Search 2024 and their creations, aiming to foster sustainable fashion practices among emerging designers. These budding designers will follow in the footsteps of Uzair Shoid, the winner of the KL10 Designer Search 2022, who presented a full collection in the same segment last year and will return to KLFW 2024 with his eponymous label.

A Collaborative Effort

The success of KLFW 2024 is poised to be a collaborative effort, supported by an array of sponsors and partners. Andrew Tan, Founder of Kuala Lumpur Fashion Week, expressed his anticipation, stating, “Following the success of KLFW 2023’s refreshed format of seven different spaces across seven days, we are fueled by even greater expectations and aspirations to deliver another year of cutting-edge trends, meaningful impact, and world-class fashion. KLFW 2024 and its new iconic show space for the year will be a testament to our 12-year journey in advocating for the homegrown fashion industry, made possible by the support of designers, sponsors, partners, and the local fashion-savvy community.”

Sponsors such as Suria KLCC, KLCC (Holdings) Sdn Bhd, AmBank Group, L’Oréal Paris, Poh Kong, MOCCONA, and collaborator PEUGEOT are playing pivotal roles in bringing this year’s event to life. Additionally, partners like Philips Garment Care, Magnum, Colgate, Laurier, and Skechers, along with official hotels Mandarin Oriental Kuala Lumpur, Traders Hotel Kuala Lumpur, and Impiana KLCC Hotel, have been instrumental in organizing the various events and activations leading up to show week.

Events and Highlights Beyond KLFW 2024

The excitement of KLFW 2024 extends beyond the runway shows. Two notable events post-KLFW are Fashion Connect.24 and the Kuala Lumpur Fashion Awards (KLFA). Fashion Connect.24 is a full-day networking and educational event aimed at strengthening the fashion industry supply chain through a sustainable and forward-thinking ecosystem. Featuring notable fashion designers as panelists, this event will provide valuable insights and foster collaboration within the industry.

The KLFA will honor the nation’s celebrated designers and industry figures in a star-studded ceremony, paying tribute to the resilience and innovation displayed by Malaysian designers and style makers. This event will highlight the significant contributions of the local fashion community and recognize outstanding achievements in the industry.
