A bluefin tuna weighing 224.1 kg has set a new record as the largest tuna ever cut in an event at Haku Extraordinary Japanese Cuisine, Penang.
Aaron Tan Qi Ming, executive director of Haku Extraordinary Japanese Cuisine, announced the achievement, stating the fish was specially flown in from Japan.
“The tuna was purchased during an auction for RM300,000,” he said.
Dassai Summer Festival brings unique event to Penang
The record-breaking event was co-organised by Haku, Dajin, and CTI Express during the Dassai Summer Festival, held for the first time in Penang on 19 and 20 July.
David Tan Yang Tee, director of CTI Express, a subsidiary of Dajin, explained the inspiration behind the festival.
“After a successful event in Kuala Lumpur last year, Aaron wanted something special for Haku, which led us to host a sake festival here in Penang,” he said.
Setting a new record in the Malaysian Book of Records added a significant highlight to the festival.
“Dassai is one of the most popular premium sake brands in the world,” David noted.
“It was the first sake served at a White House Japanese state dinner during Barack Obama’s presidency and Shinzo Abe’s tenure as Prime Minister in 2015.”
Haku: Official recognition and hybrid fish delicacy
Hanim Mohd Nor, an official from the Malaysian Book of Records, confirmed two records set during the event: the ‘Heaviest Bluefin Tuna Live Cutting Event’ at 224.1 kg and the ‘Most Buri Hira Cuts Served in a Month’ with 3,410 cuts.
Aaron Tan highlighted the significance of the Buri Hira, a hybrid fish between the Yellowtail Tuna (Buri) and Hiramasa.
“This hybrid fish tastes better than others,” he said, emphasising the unique culinary experience offered at the event.
The record-setting event drew an impressive crowd, including Jagdeep Singh Deo, Deputy Chief Minister II of Penang; Lim Siew Khim, Executive Councillor for Social Development, Welfare, and Non-Islamic Affairs; Connie Lim, state assemblywoman for Seri Delima; and Wong Yuee Harng, state assemblyman for Pengkalan Kota.
The Consul-General of Japan, Kawaguchi Yoshiyasu, and his entourage were also present, highlighting the international significance of the event.
The festival also attracted members of prestigious car clubs. Alan Chong, President of Singapore’s Lamborghini Club, attended with owners and friends of nine Lamborghinis, showcasing a blend of culinary excellence and luxury.
Other notable attendees included KC Tan, president of Northern Supercar Club Malaysia; Andy Cheeng, president of Lamborghini Malaysia Community, and committee member Marcus Ng; along with Kenneth Teh and Alvin Lee from the Ferrari Owner Club Malaysia.
Haku’s achievement of setting a new record for the largest tuna cut in Malaysia, combined with the success of the Dassai Summer Festival, marks a significant milestone in the country’s culinary scene.
This event not only highlights Haku’s commitment to excellence but also showcases Penang as a vibrant hub for unique and record-breaking experiences.
