Automechanika Kuala Lumpur 2024: Driving innovation forward

Automechanika Kuala Lumpur 2024 kicks off, spotlighting EVs, sustainability, and innovation, attracting global industry players

The highly anticipated 13th edition of Automechanika Kuala Lumpur has officially commenced, running from August 1 to August 3, 2024, at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre. The event was inaugurated by Faizal Mohd Yusof, Senior Director of Industry Development Division at the Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry, aligning seamlessly with Malaysia’s national objectives.

This year’s exhibition focuses on attracting foreign direct investments (FDIs), promoting energy-efficient and high-tech vehicles, and fortifying the local supply chain, all while supporting the New Industrial Master Plan (NIMP) 2030.

Faizal emphasized the critical role of the automotive sector in Malaysia’s future, stating, “The nation anxiously awaits our homegrown EVs from Perodua and Proton. To achieve our goal of having xEVs—comprising passenger and commercial vehicles as well as EV motorcycles—make up 80% of the total industry volume by 2050, it is crucial that we bring EV to the masses by having affordable EVs in the market.”

Global industry players and key highlights

Automechanika Kuala Lumpur 2024 serves as a hub for global industry players, showcasing the latest in automotive mobility solutions. This includes electrification, digitalization, automotive manufacturing and automation, supply chain and logistics, sustainability, and innovative aftermarket products and services. The event provides an excellent platform for sourcing, networking, knowledge-sharing, training, and forging strategic partnerships to drive the industry forward.

This year, 310 exhibitors from 19 countries are participating, drawing professional visitors from over 45 nations, including Australia, Canada, France, Japan, Saudi Arabia, and Vietnam. The surge in electric vehicle (EV) brands in Malaysia is expected to accelerate the transformation of the local automotive supply chain, positioning Malaysia as a prime destination for FDI from global automakers.

“The influx of EV brands into the Malaysian market is a testament to our commitment in shaping a cleaner, greener future. This transition is not only beneficial for our environment but also positions Malaysia as an attractive destination for global automakers and investors,” Faizal added.

One of the standout features of the event is the Automotive Mobility Solutions Conference & Zone, showcasing the latest trends in electrification, digitalization, AI adoption, automotive manufacturing and automation, logistics and supply chain enhancement, sustainability, and ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance).

Supported by the Malaysian Investment Development Authority (MIDA), the conference will feature insights from over 30 industry leaders, including Bosch Rexroth, Henkel, and Siemens.

Innovation, sustainability, and talent development

Innovation is a key theme at this year’s exhibition, with the Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) presenting its first-ever pavilion dedicated to Automotive Tech, highlighting cutting-edge automotive technologies and fostering innovation. The Selangor And Federal Territory Engineering And Motor Parts Traders Association (EMPTA) is organizing a pavilion showcasing the latest in automotive original equipment (OE) and aftermarket products and services.

Additionally, the Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (MIROS) and CyberSecurity Malaysia will spotlight advancements in vehicle safety and environmental standards.

To boost talent development, the exhibition includes a Collision Repair Training Workshop. This workshop, in collaboration with renowned institutions and industry experts, will cover the basics and technical specifications of EV subsystems, diagnostics, repair, and sustainable body and painting practices.

“Malaysia is a destination to watch in terms of how it sets out to transform into a regional powerhouse for new energy vehicles and a pioneer of mobility solutions. Our vastly established network and resources can support this progress and growth. This year’s show marks a significant milestone, shifting from a biennial event to yearly in order to help industry players connect more regularly and keep up-to-date with global trends,” said Fiona Chew, general manager of Messe Frankfurt (HK) Limited, the organizer of Automechanika.

Automechanika Kuala Lumpur 2024 is set to play a pivotal role in Malaysia’s automotive industry, driving innovation, supporting sustainability initiatives, and fostering talent development.
