In a surprising move, Google has launched its new Google TV Streamer, ahead of the anticipated release of the Pixel 9 series set for August 14. This updated streaming device replaces the Chromecast with Google TV, which debuted in 2020. With its sleek design, the new device can now be placed on surfaces instead of hanging behind the television, making it more accessible and user-friendly.
Enhanced features for an immersive experience
The Google TV Streamer introduces several significant upgrades that enhance its functionality. It now supports video content up to 4K at 60 frames per second, along with HDR Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos audio for a more immersive viewing experience. The device is powered by a processor that is 22% faster than its predecessor, boasting 4GB of RAM and 32GB of storage—double the RAM and quadruple the storage compared to the old Chromecast. Notably, the inclusion of a LAN port marks the first time a Google streaming device has had this feature, catering to users who prefer a stable internet connection.
With the integration of Google’s AI, the Google Gemini, users can receive content recommendations, summaries, and reviews directly from the home menu, making it easier to discover new shows and movies. Additionally, the remote control has been redesigned with a new “Find My Remote” feature, allowing users to locate it by making it emit a sound. The remote also includes direct shortcuts for popular streaming platforms like YouTube and Netflix.
A shift in Google’s streaming strategy
Google’s decision to phase out the Chromecast brand stems from the evolving landscape of smart TVs, many of which now come with built-in streaming capabilities. As a result, Google believes that the need for standalone Chromecast devices has diminished. The company will continue to support existing Chromecast users but will no longer produce new models. Instead, the Google TV Streamer is positioned as a versatile streaming box that can connect directly to televisions while providing robust streaming capabilities and integration with Google’s ecosystem.
The Google TV Streamer is set to retail in the United States starting September for $99.99 (~RM447) and will be available in two colors: Hazel and Porcelain. This price point positions it as a mid-range option in the competitive streaming market, rivaling devices such as the Apple TV 4K.
Future-proofing your home entertainment
In addition to streaming services, the Google TV Streamer is designed to be a central hub for smart home technology, supporting Google Home, Matter, and Threads. The built-in Thread border router allows it to act as a controller for various smart devices, enhancing the interconnectedness of a user’s home. Users can easily access smart home controls through the Google Home panel on the device’s main screen, making it a comprehensive solution for home entertainment and automation.
With additional features like an ambient mode for personalized artwork displays and the ability to pair Pixel Buds Pro for spatial audio, the Google TV Streamer is not just a streaming device but a multifunctional entertainment hub.
As the tech giant prepares for its upcoming Pixel event, the launch of the Google TV Streamer marks a pivotal moment in Google’s evolution in home entertainment technology, setting the stage for more innovations to come.
