Sixty students with disabilities from five schools around Penang Island are set to embark on a transformative journey into the world of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) through the Penang Science Cluster’s InclusiveSTEM programme.

Kicking off next week, the initiative is a collaboration between the Penang Science Cluster and Intel, aimed at providing these students with valuable exposure to STEM careers and skills.

The programme, which aligns with the Penang2030 vision, will see 76 Intel volunteers mentoring students as they explore various STEM activities and work on their Project Instructables, to be showcased at the Penang International Science Fair (PISF) 2024.

The students, divided into three cohorts, hail from SMK Tanjong Bungah, SMK Padang Polo, SMK Pendidikan Khas Persekutuan, SMK Jelutong, and SMK Georgetown.

The InclusiveSTEM programme, which begins on August 14 and continues until October 2024, is designed to engage students in hands-on STEM experiences that could shape their future careers.

Activities will include 3D printing and modelling, coding arcade games, building Lego Robotics, exploring with Foldscopes, and working with EDU:bit and micro:Maqueen robotics kits.

These activities are not just about learning technology but about fostering creativity, problem-solving, and collaboration among students with disabilities.

Penang State Executive Councillor for Youth, Sports, and Health, Daniel Gooi Zi Sen, who officiated the programme, highlighted its importance in preparing students for a digital future.

“By equipping students with disabilities with STEM skills, we are not only preparing them for the digital future but also contributing to a more inclusive workforce, which is essential for Penang’s growth,” said Gooi.

He emphasised that InclusiveSTEM directly supports Penang’s goal of reducing inequalities and empowering vulnerable communities, aligning with the Penang2030 vision.

Building a future in STEM

InclusiveSTEM is not just about education; it is about building a more inclusive and resilient community. PSC’s Chief Executive Officer, Dato’ Ooi Peng Ee, stressed that the programme aims to inspire vulnerable students to develop technical skills that could significantly improve their lives.

“This is critical because transformational technologies such as AI and humanoid robotics will augment our human intelligence and capabilities,” Ooi said.

“If our students pursue studies and careers in science and technology fields, they could help shape future technologies and improve the lives of every differently-abled member of our community.”

The students participating in the programme have a range of disabilities, including hearing, physical, and learning disabilities such as autism and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).

This diversity underscores the programme’s inclusivity and its commitment to providing equal opportunities for all students to engage in STEM.

Intel’s Information Technology Director, Joseph Lim, expressed the company’s dedication to supporting these students, both financially and through mentorship.

Intel has committed approximately RM55,000 (USD12,000) to the programme and will provide STEM learning kits and loaned laptops to the students.

“Our support to this programme extends beyond financial contributions; it includes the dedication of Intel volunteers who will mentor and guide students through hands-on STEM activities,” Lim said.

“These Intel professionals from various departments have stepped up to share their knowledge and expertise and inspire students to explore fields that may have seemed out of reach.”

The InclusiveSTEM programme is a powerful example of how education, technology, and community support can come together to create opportunities for students with disabilities.

By equipping these students with STEM skills, the programme is not only preparing them for future careers but also contributing to a more inclusive and innovative society.

As these students begin their journey, the hope is that they will be inspired to pursue careers in STEM, helping to shape the technologies of tomorrow and create a better future for all.
