Heart Heroes Charity Run 2024 raises RM40,000

On August 18, 2024, the Heart Heroes Charity Run, organized by Yayasan Jantung Kongenital Malaysia (YJKM) in partnership with the Malaysian Paediatric Cardiac Society (MPCS), successfully raised RM40,000 for congenital heart disease (CHD). The event, held at the University Malaya (UM) Arena, saw the participation of 700 individuals who came together to support children and families affected by CHD.

Congenital heart disease is a significant health issue, affecting approximately 1 in every 100 babies globally. In Malaysia, around 5,000 babies are born with CHD each year. This condition involves structural abnormalities of the heart present from birth, which can lead to lifelong health challenges. Although the precise cause of CHD is often unknown, early and effective surgical interventions can greatly enhance the quality of life for affected individuals. It is estimated that nearly 3,000 Malaysians will require heart surgery at some point in their lives.

Community support and event highlights

The Heart Heroes Charity Run featured both a 5km and a 1.2km race, catering to participants of various ages and fitness levels. The event was not just about running; it included a range of family-friendly activities such as free dental check-ups and special activities for children, creating a vibrant and inclusive atmosphere.

Eric Tan Chin Zhia, CEO of YJKM and Co-Chair of the Heart Heroes Run, expressed his enthusiasm for the event, stating, “We have been planning this charity run for a long time. It’s fantastic to see it come to fruition with the support of all our collaborators. Our goal is to raise even more funds for CHD patients in the future and make a real difference in their lives.”

Impact of generous sponsorships

The success of the Heart Heroes Charity Run was significantly bolstered by the contributions of various sponsors. Notable supporters included Le Meridien Putrajaya Hotel, Be Pharmacy, Cardiac Vascular Sentral Kuala Lumpur (CVSKL), and several other organizations. Their generosity played a crucial role in the event’s success.

The funds raised will be allocated to YJKM’s congenital heart surgery programs, including providing surgeries for underprivileged children and enhancing pediatric cardiology services. This financial support also helps to raise public awareness about CHD and solidifies YJKM’s position as a leading advocate for those affected by the condition.

Yayasan Jantung Kongenital Malaysia remains steadfast in its mission to improve the lives of those impacted by congenital heart disease. To date, YJKM has invested over RM500,000 in supporting CHD patients, including sponsoring heart surgeries for families from the B40 income group and providing essential equipment to local heart centers.
