The long-awaited Batu Kawan Bridge, strategically located near Batu Kawan Stadium, is slated to open its doors to the public in October. Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow, who also chairs the Penang Development Corporation (PDC), confirmed that the construction project, which commenced in December 2022, is currently 85% complete. Despite experiencing a setback due to a partial bridge collapse earlier this year, Chow reassured the public that comprehensive measures have been implemented to avert similar issues in the future.
During a recent site visit, Chow highlighted the importance of the bridge in improving regional connectivity. Chow stated the project faced a slight delay following the unfortunate incident. However, the PDC has taken necessary steps to ensure such incidents will not happen again. The chief minister expressed confidence that construction is back on track, with completion expected by the end of September.
Key features of the bridge
The Batu Kawan Bridge spans 1 kilometer and is being constructed at a cost of RM23 million. It will feature a three-lane dual carriageway, designed to significantly enhance access between Bukit Tambun and Batu Kawan. Umech Construction Sdn Bhd is the contractor for this vital infrastructure project, which aims to alleviate traffic congestion in the area and promote economic growth.
Chow emphasized the bridge’s potential impact on local residents and businesses, stating that once operational, it will drastically improve access and mobility in the region. PDC chief executive officer Datuk Aziz Bakar joined Chow during the site visit, echoing the sentiments regarding the project’s significance. The public can expect the bridge to be fully operational next month, marking a new chapter in connectivity for Penang.
As the completion date approaches, the excitement builds among local residents, who eagerly anticipate the improvements that the Batu Kawan Bridge will bring to their daily lives. The Batu Kawan Bridge is poised to become a vital component of Penang’s transport network, with its completion marking a significant enhancement in the area’s connectivity and infrastructure.
