Abbott’s new campaign highlights inspiring diabetes success stories

Abbott’s #StartsWithYou campaign empowers Malaysians with diabetes to manage their health through inspiring success stories and lifestyle changes.

In the lead-up to Diabetes Awareness Month, Abbott has launched the Glucerna® #StartsWithYou campaign, an initiative designed to encourage Malaysians to take control of their diabetes and lead healthier lives. By sharing success stories from individuals who have transformed their health through a structured four-week lifestyle intervention, Abbott aims to show that effective diabetes management is within reach.

“The prevalence of diabetes remains high in Malaysia, so it’s important to help individuals adopt healthy habits and strategies to manage their condition,” stated Dr. Nina Mazera Mohd Said, Abbott’s nutrition medical director in Malaysia. “The Glucerna® Lifestyle Change Program has supported many people with diabetes manage their glucose levels through positive lifestyle changes including good nutrition and exercise. Today, we are happy to showcase some success stories to empower more Malaysians with diabetes to build healthy habits.”

Success Stories

A major highlight of the campaign is the personal testimony of Malaysians who have achieved meaningful improvements in their glucose levels. Ainaa Munirah Pang, a 39-year-old chef, shared her journey with diabetes management through the Glucerna® Lifestyle Change Program (GLCP). Diagnosed with type 2 diabetes at age 27, Ainaa has faced ongoing challenges in balancing her health and the demands of her culinary career. However, the GLCP program offered her guidance and a supportive community.

“Joining the program was life-changing,” Ainaa expressed. “It wasn’t just about controlling my glucose level but also about finding a community of support and making small changes that added up to a big difference.” The GLCP, established in 2021, equips participants with knowledge on diet, exercise, and the importance of regular glucose monitoring, along with emotional support from trained doctors and like-minded peers.

Dr. Zanariah Hussein, head of the endocrine unit at Putrajaya Hospital, emphasized the impact of such structured support. “Most Malaysians living with diabetes have obesity or overweight, so structured lifestyle interventions, nutritional management, and a robust support system can help improve their weight and condition,” she noted.

Role of Nutrition in Diabetes Management

Central to the GLCP approach is Glucerna®, a scientifically-formulated diabetes-specific nutrition formula. Designed to provide a steady release of glucose, Glucerna® helps users manage their blood sugar levels. Clinical studies, including research published in Diabetes Care, have shown that Glucerna® can help individuals maintain glucose levels within the target range up to 90% of the time within a four-week period. The formula’s low glycaemic index carbohydrates help reduce post-meal blood sugar spikes, while its essential nutrients support overall health.

“While there are many factors in managing diabetes, nutrition remains critical,” said Indra Balaratnam, a consultant dietitian. “Individuals with diabetes need to be aware of their eating habits and make informed choices that incorporate a variety of foods in moderation.”

As part of the #StartsWithYou campaign, Malaysians are invited to share their personal diabetes management journeys. Participants who submit their stories to the Abbott Nutrition Careline will receive a Glucerna® Wellness Pack. For more information on the campaign, individuals can visit Abbott’s website or follow their social media channels, fostering a community of support for those managing diabetes.
