The 2024 Viva Marini Bartending Competition (VMBC) once again brought together the crème de la crème of Kuala Lumpur’s bartending scene. Held on November 11, 2024, at the MariGin Gin Bar, the event celebrated the artistry of mixology and the relentless passion of local bartenders. Ten finalists battled it out in an electrifying live showcase, demonstrating their skills and creativity while crafting cocktails inspired by the themes “Italian Twist” and “Glitterati.”
The competition, organized by the illustrious Marini’s Group, highlighted the depth of Malaysia’s bartending talent, leaving the audience and judges thoroughly impressed.
A young star shines bright
Emerging victorious was Rosyam Hakimi, the youngest competitor at just 21 years old. Representing Here & Now, Rosyam captivated the judges with two standout creations: Breakfast in Italy and Mama Gua. The former, a Negroni twist inspired by Caprese salad, showcased his ingenuity with ingredients such as basil and cheese-infused Roku Gin, tomato water, and Campari. The latter, a nostalgic homage to childhood memories, featured a delicate blend of clarified guava juice, Havana Club Rum, and a touch of saline.
Rosyam took home RM10,000 in cash and the coveted trophy. His cocktails will also feature on the prestigious Marini’s on 57 Bar and Lounge menu, marking a significant milestone in his budding career.
Innovation and elegance define the runner-ups
Second place went to the seasoned Jason Dennis D’Cruz of Te Amo, who once again narrowly missed the top spot after his runner-up finish last year. His Italian-inspired Sapori d’Italia combined Martell Noblige with Sambuca and rosemary syrup, while his Glitterati-themed Mint BonBon was a velvety indulgence of Havana Rum, Creme de menthe, and almond syrup.
Rounding out the top three was Tan Xun of Reka Bar, whose drinks, Cham Ponce and Eternal Temptation, pushed the boundaries of creativity. Combining tea, coffee, dark rum, and Irish whiskey, Cham Ponce honored Malaysia’s “cham” tradition, while Eternal Temptation married rose gin and chocolate bitters for a sensory delight.
“It is always a pleasure to see the creative concoctions that the finalists come up with for the competition. There were high standards once again with several interesting concepts and techniques, which underpins why we created this event.” said Cavaliere Modesto Marini, founder of The Marini’s Group.
A platform for creativity and growth
The Viva Marini Bartending Competition, launched in 2022, continues to be a beacon for aspiring bartenders and seasoned mixologists. Participants submit video entries showcasing their signature creations before advancing to the finals. This year’s judging panel included renowned bartending figures such as Jon Lee of Penrose KL and Nicholas Ng, F&B journalist from Food for Thought. Spirits partners like Pernod Ricard Malaysia and Beam Suntory lent their support to elevate the event.
“It is an honour to be able to provide this platform for the bartending community where industry professionals and upcoming talents get to exhibit their skills and be seen and supported by their peers and people in the industry,” Marini added.
As the curtains closed on VMBC 2024, the event reaffirmed Kuala Lumpur’s position as a hub for mixology innovation, with its participants raising the bar higher each year.
