In Penang, soaring meat prices are driving households, particularly low-income families, to turn to eggs as an affordable protein alternative.
State Agrotechnology, Food Security, and Cooperative Development committee chairman Fahmi Zainol emphasised the vital role of eggs in addressing food affordability and accessibility.
“Eggs provide a nutritious and affordable source of protein for families on tight budgets, especially compared to pricier meats like beef and pork,” said Fahmi.
He noted that poultry farming requires less land than livestock farming, making eggs a sustainable protein option for areas with limited resources.
Why eggs are a popular choice
The popularity of eggs has surged amid prolonged price controls on chicken and the rising cost of meat.
From 2021 to 2023, these price controls prompted households to explore more affordable protein options.
Eggs, with their predictable supply and high nutritional value, have become a reliable choice for families.
Unlike fish, which are influenced by natural conditions, poultry farming offers a more consistent protein source.
“Poultry farming ensures a steady supply of eggs, making it a practical alternative to meat,” Fahmi said.
Additionally, Penang’s population dynamics and consumption patterns have influenced protein demand.
A decline in per capita consumption of pork, chicken, and mutton was recorded in 2021 compared to 2020, according to the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM).
Factors such as reduced population growth rates and restrictions on international travel during the pandemic also contributed to these changes.
Broader challenges impacting protein demand
Penang’s food landscape has faced multiple challenges.
The outbreak of African Swine Fever (ASF) significantly impacted pork production, leading to price increases and a shift in demand toward alternative proteins like chicken, duck, and eggs.
Fahmi explained that while pork production remained sufficient, its rising cost further encouraged the switch to eggs.
“Eggs have become a dependable and budget-friendly protein source during these trying times,” he said.
A recent UNICEF report, Families on the Edge, Penang, highlighted a 47% decline in meat consumption in 2022 compared to pre-pandemic levels.
Many families faced food insecurity and financial pressures, turning to eggs to maintain their nutritional needs.
As Penang continues to grapple with rising food prices, eggs stand out as a versatile and cost-effective protein source.
Fahmi urged continued focus on sustainable poultry farming to ensure affordability and availability.
The growing reliance on eggs underscores the need for policies that address food security and affordability.
For families struggling with rising costs, eggs represent not just an alternative, but a solution to maintaining a balanced diet.
