Merdeka 118 Precinct hosts inclusive MOVE8 Walk-A-Hunt

Explore culture, fitness & tech at MOVE8 Walk-A-Hunt @ Merdeka 118. Join the scavenger hunt around KL’s iconic precinct on 18 Jan 2025.

The MOVE8 Walk-A-Hunt @ Merdeka 118 Precinct promises to be an event like no other, bringing together the best of arts, culture, fitness, and technology. Set to take place on 18 January 2025, the event is spearheaded by Tourism Malaysia and supported by PNB Merdeka Ventures Sdn. Berhad and Think City. It offers participants a unique opportunity to explore the iconic Merdeka 118 precinct, home to the world’s second-tallest tower at 678.9 metres, through a scavenger hunt-style adventure.

This initiative is further enriched by an international collaboration between Australia and Malaysia. The cultural exchange is accentuated by an innovative VR360 film slated for release later in the year, enabling virtual participation for those unable to join in person.

Jasmine Low, emerging film director and cofounder of EQn Activation Studios, shared her excitement, “I am thrilled to be a part of this groundbreaking project, as it marks a first Australian Malaysian VR360 film co-production. Merging creative VR technology, adaptive screenwriting and cinematic lens, we aim to bring cities like Port Macquarie, Sydney’s Chinatown and Kuala Lumpur into the living rooms of more people, bringing them along with us as we map more cities around the region. We seek to enhance access to sports, fitness and wellness via futuristic film and VR technology”

Revitalising Public Spaces Around Merdeka 118

At the heart of this event is the goal of activating and revitalising public spaces within the Merdeka 118 precinct. Supported by the Merdeka 118 Community Grants Programme, this initiative not only highlights the iconic Stadium Merdeka—a site deeply ingrained in Malaysia’s independence history—but also fosters community engagement and inclusivity.

Dato’ Tengku Ab. Aziz, CEO of PNB Merdeka Ventures Sdn. Berhad, emphasized the significance of the event, “We are truly delighted to welcome everyone to Stadium Merdeka, a heritage site that holds a special place in Malaysia’s history as the birthplace of our journey to independence. Whether you are joining us physically or virtually, this iconic venue continues to inspire as we honour its rich legacy through meaningful and vibrant community events like this one.”

Participants of all ages and abilities can look forward to an enriching experience, walking alongside representatives from communities such as the Malaysian Blind Sports Association and YWCA.

Inclusivity Through Walking and Virtual Reality

A key focus of the MOVE8 Walk-A-Hunt is inclusivity. Impact producer Nikki Yeo highlighted how walking fosters community connection and mental health benefits, “Only a small population of people can run but more people can walk. Walking is inclusive of more people and walking even short distances with somebody can make a difference in mental health. We included the VR-element to include those who are unable to walk long distances so that they can still participate virtually using the VR film.”

The event merges traditional physical activities with modern technology, ensuring that everyone—from avid explorers to those preferring virtual experiences—can be part of the celebration.

A Celebration of Fitness, Wellness, and Cultural Exchange

As part of the AFT International Sports Fitness Festival, this event builds on the success of previous initiatives in Port Macquarie and Sydney’s Chinatown. By offering both free individual participation and corporate team packages priced at A$2,500, the MOVE8 Walk-A-Hunt ensures accessibility while fostering corporate-community collaboration.

The event will not only highlight Kuala Lumpur’s rich cultural and historical heritage but also set a benchmark for integrating technology and community-building efforts. With its blend of creativity, innovation, and inclusivity, the MOVE8 Walk-A-Hunt @ Merdeka 118 Precinct is poised to redefine how public spaces are activated in Malaysia and beyond.
