Nine-year-old Grace Lim is in the fight of her life. Diagnosed with leukaemia at just five years old, Grace has endured years of painful treatments and setbacks.
Now, her family is racing against time to raise RM825,000 for CAR-T Cell Therapy, a cutting-edge treatment available only in Singapore, offering her a crucial chance at survival.
“CAR-T therapy gives Grace her best shot,” said Jason Lim, her father.
“But we’ve depleted our savings after spending RM800,000 on treatments. We need help to make this possible.”
Grace Lim: A heartbreaking journey
Grace was first diagnosed with B-cell leukaemia in 2020. After enduring chemotherapy, she went into remission for over a year.
However, in January 2023, her cancer returned, forcing her to undergo another round of chemotherapy and a bone marrow transplant (BMT).
Just 100 days after the BMT, doctors confirmed the cancer had spread to her brain, a condition known as central nervous system (CNS) relapse.
This aggressive development made treatment even more challenging.
“The doctors said she might need total body radiation, but it could cause severe side effects, including infertility,” Jason explained.
Recently, complications arose again when Grace developed sepsis and tested positive for respiratory syncytial virus (RSV).
Her infection delayed treatment and further weakened her fragile immune system.
“Her white blood cell count is now zero. She has no immunity,” added her mother, Pei Chyn.
CAR-T Cell Therapy gives a glimmer of hope
Grace’s doctors recommend CAR-T Cell Therapy, an innovative treatment that reprogrammes immune cells to target and destroy cancer cells.
Studies show remission rates of up to 85% for relapsed leukaemia patients.
“Usually, when patients relapse after BMT in Malaysia, the next step is palliative care. But CAR-T offers hope,” Jason said.
Despite the promise of CAR-T therapy, its cost is prohibitive. At RM825,000, the treatment is out of reach for Grace’s family without external support.
Grace’s parents have turned to fundraising campaigns through platforms like CCAM and Sokong.org.
While grateful for the RM9,200 raised so far, they are still far from the amount needed.
“Every contribution matters,” Jason said.
“It will give Grace the opportunity to fight this disease and have a future.”
Grace dreams of returning to school, catching up on her studies, and enjoying simple childhood joys like drawing.
Despite her suffering, she bravely endures painful treatments, even allowing her parents to shave her hair for the third time.
“She’s incredibly strong, but she needs this treatment to survive,” Pei Chyn said.
Grace’s family urgently needs your support to raise the funds for CAR-T Cell Therapy. No child should face the devastating consequences of financial constraints in their fight for life.
