Students unmask emotional intelligence in artistic public display

University of Cyberjaya students showcased emotional intelligence in The Unmasked exhibition, featuring 100 masks and 11 short films on empathy and growth.

As the world steps into 2025, emotional intelligence (EI) takes center stage as a vital skill for navigating life’s complexities. To spotlight its significance, 160 Foundation in Arts (FIART) students from the University of Cyberjaya’s Centre for Foundation, Language, and General Studies (CFLGS) brought their emotional journeys to life in The Unmasked: Emotional Intelligence Exhibition & Short Film Screening. Held on 8 January 2025, the event showcased 100 intricately designed masks and 11 emotionally charged short films, marking the culmination of their Emotional Intelligence course.

Each mask represented a student’s unique inner world, offering a visual exploration of their emotional landscapes. The event, guided by lecturer and registered counselor Ms. Nur Atiqah Mohd Jani, became a platform for students to express their reflections and personal growth, sparking introspection among attendees.

Short Films: A Journey of Empathy and Resilience

The highlight of the Unmasked event was the screening of 11 short films, which delved into themes of empathy, resilience, and personal growth. Titles such as You’ll Never Walk Alone, The Broken Bridge, Threads of Connection, and Violette captured the audience’s imagination and emotions, blending creativity with powerful narratives.

For the students, seeing their work on the big screen was profoundly moving. “Watching our films on screen was emotional, as they captured everything we learned in class,” said Shoban Kumar a/l Siva Kumar, one of the participants. He added that the event deepened his understanding of emotions and taught him how to better support those around him.

Skills for Lifelong Success

The Emotional Intelligence course, taught by Ms. Atiqah Jani, focused on essential topics such as self-awareness and recognizing emotions in others. Reflecting on the course’s impact, Ms. Atiqah said, “Emotional intelligence is a foundation for success, both personally and professionally.” The course aimed to equip students with skills like empathy and effective communication, crucial for navigating relationships and challenges in their future endeavors.

Through the artistic journey, students not only discovered their creative potential but also developed emotional resilience and deeper self-awareness, preparing them for both academic and personal challenges ahead.
