Over the past weekend, 1 Mont Kiara was transformed into a breathtaking stage of artistry and tradition as it hosted a spectacular two-day cultural showcase on Feb 8 and 9, 2025. Organised by the MK Chinese Community, the event, themed ‘Endless Auspiciousness, Everlasting Vitality’, drew enthusiastic crowds eager to immerse themselves in the rich and vibrant heritage of Chinese performing arts.
Visitors were treated to a grand display of traditional and contemporary performances, with a special emphasis on China’s centuries-old cultural traditions. From intricate tea ceremonies to mesmerizing dance performances, the event highlighted the essence of Chinese heritage while fostering a deeper appreciation for its artistic expressions.
The Art of Tea-Making
Among the standout attractions was the Tea Ceremony: Harmony for the World, where professional tea masters demonstrated the intricate techniques and cultural significance of traditional tea-making. Shoppers not only observed but also participated, using professional-grade tea-making equipment provided by the organiser. The tea ceremony presenters emphasized fluid movements when preparing and serving the drink, drawing parallels to a flowing river—symbolising harmony and balance.
Following the tea ceremony, the main stage lit up with a two-hour performance showcase that captivated audiences. The choral performance Xiaoya·Deer Cry, featuring adult and child singers in traditional white and maroon costumes, set an ethereal tone. Classical dance performances, including Butterfly Lovers, Dreaming of Jiangnan, and an exhilarating Xinjiang folk dance, further showcased the depth of Chinese artistic expression.
One of the most awe-inspiring moments came from the dramatic Sichuan Opera face-changing performance, where skilled artists seamlessly switched between vibrant masks in the blink of an eye. The evening continued with stirring musical renditions, including Four Seasons Song and Jasmine Flower, while soloist Qian Shuyi left the audience spellbound with her soulful rendition of Gazing at the Moon.
Mesmerising Performances
The festival was not only a celebration of tradition but also a platform for young talent. Children’s performances, including street dance and a lively band performance, brought an infectious energy to the event. A standout moment was the electrifying dance rendition of the viral song APT, which saw young performers synchronizing their moves to the upbeat rhythm, much to the delight of the audience.
Patriotic pride was another highlight, with stirring performances of Glorious China and My Motherland and I, showcasing the performers’ love for their heritage. The event successfully merged traditional arts with contemporary forms of entertainment, demonstrating the evolving nature of Chinese culture while keeping its deep-rooted traditions alive.
“We are thrilled by the positive response from the community,” said Ji Jie, a representative of the MK Chinese Community. “This event was designed to showcase the depth of Chinese heritage and allow both the younger generation and the wider community to experience its beauty firsthand.”
She added, “The performances beautifully intertwine the essence of the Spring Festival and Lantern Festival, celebrating unity and cultural pride. Our young performers, all of Chinese or mixed-Chinese heritage, are the children of our community members. Each performance is an original creation, meticulously choreographed to highlight our unique cultural identity.”
Strengthening Cultural Ties Through Art and Tradition
The showcase aimed not just to entertain but also to promote cultural appreciation and strengthen Malaysia-China relations through shared traditions. The event featured performances reflecting the ethnic and historical diversity within Chinese culture, including the 2,500-year-old choral piece Xiaoya·Deer Cry from the Book of Songs and vibrant Xinjiang and Dunhuang dances.
Ooi Wai Sheng, Advertising & Promotions Executive at 1 Mont Kiara, expressed pride in hosting the cultural showcase. “We are honoured to provide a platform for this incredible celebration that unites people through art, tradition, and cultural expression. Events like these bring vibrancy to our mall and create lasting memories for our shoppers.”
He further stated, “The two-day cultural extravaganza not only provided a stage for talented performers but also reinforced the importance of preserving and celebrating traditional Chinese arts. We look forward to bringing more cultural showcases to the public in the future.”
The MK Chinese Community: A Growing Cultural Hub
Founded in 2020 during the pandemic, the MK Chinese Community was established to foster a sense of belonging among Chinese expatriates in Mont Kiara. As restrictions eased in 2022, the community actively organised events and activities to strengthen its mission of support and togetherness.
Today, the MK Chinese Community has grown to approximately 800 members, ranging in age from 25 to 65. At its core, the community seeks to create a supportive network where Chinese individuals in Mont Kiara can come together, uplift one another, and cultivate a spirit of unity and cultural pride.
The recent cultural showcase at 1 Mont Kiara stands as a testament to the community’s commitment to preserving Chinese traditions while embracing the evolving nature of its artistic expressions.
