Chipt launches ASEAN’s first returnable cup program

Chipt launches ASEAN’s first returnable cup program, tackling single-use waste with smart tech and fostering sustainability in Malaysia’s coffee industry.

Chipt, a Malaysian sustainability startup and winner of the 2024 UNDP/ASEAN Blue Innovation Challenge, has launched ASEAN’s first returnable cup program in partnership with Iskandar Investment Berhad (IIB) and Plato Coffee. The initiative, introduced at Menara IIB, Medini, aims to address single-use cup waste by offering a smart, returnable cup system, setting a new benchmark for sustainable practices in the coffee industry.

“We’re thrilled to launch ASEAN’s first returnable cup program,” said Dato’ Nick Boden, Founder of Chipt. “This is a major step towards a more sustainable coffee industry, and we’re excited to partner with Iskandar Investment Berhad and Plato Coffee to make a real difference.”

The Chipt system features QR-coded and RFID-enabled cups designed for efficient cleaning and complete recyclability. With an innovative approach, the cups offset the carbon footprint of a disposable cup after just 2.6 uses, significantly reducing environmental impact. Customers use a dedicated mobile app to borrow and return cups, earning rewards such as a free upsize at Plato Coffee.

Medini’s Net Zero Vision and Corporate Support

The initiative aligns with Medini’s transformation into a sustainable city. Iskandar Investment Berhad, a key player in Medini’s development, has been instrumental in introducing the returnable cup system as part of its commitment to environmental responsibility.

“In line with our development of Medini Innopolis, which will feature a Net Zero Central Business District (NZCC), Medini aims to transform the township into a highly self-sustaining city,” said Diyana Mohd Amin, Senior Vice President (Head) of Sustainability & ESG at Iskandar Investment Berhad. “Plato Coffee at Menara IIB is the first to welcome this innovative measure with us. We are proud to support the initiative by Chipt and welcome more innovative solutions to Medini.”

By fostering circular economy principles, IIB is encouraging other businesses in Medini to adopt similar sustainability-driven practices. The partnership with Chipt highlights the growing role of corporate entities in promoting environmental solutions.

How the Returnable Cup System Works

The returnable cup program benefits multiple stakeholders, from coffee shops to consumers:

  • Coffee Shops: Reduction in CO2 emissions, waste, and operational costs.
  • Employees: Access to healthier, zero-waste beverage options.
  • Customers: Convenient and rewarding experience, with eco-friendly incentives.

Plato Coffee, as the first café to introduce the system, is setting a precedent for other coffee outlets. Chipt is also exploring the expansion of its loyalty rewards program to incentivize more customers to adopt reusable cups.

Regional Expansion and Future Plans

Chipt’s success in launching the returnable cup initiative in Malaysia has positioned it as a leader in sustainable packaging solutions. The startup is set to present its innovation at the upcoming ASEAN Blue Innovation Expo & Business Matching event in Jakarta, organized by the UNDP, ASEAN, and funded by the Japanese government. This platform will provide Chipt with opportunities to attract further investments and expand its model across the region.

By replacing single-use cups with a smart returnable system, Chipt is championing waste reduction and environmental responsibility, proving that sustainable solutions can be both practical and rewarding for businesses and consumers alike.
