futureK programme to reshape healthcare access for gig workers

foodpanda and Heydoc Health launch futureK, Malaysia’s first outpatient care pilot for gig workers, offering riders and families affordable healthcare.

In a landmark move to address healthcare access gaps in Malaysia’s gig economy, foodpanda Malaysia has teamed up with digital healthcare innovator Heydoc Health to launch futureK, the country’s first outpatient care pilot programme tailored specifically for delivery partners and their families.

The pilot initiative was officially unveiled in Kuala Lumpur with key representatives from both organizations present, including Dr Raymond Choy, CEO of Heydoc Health, and Shubham Saran, Director of Operations at foodpanda Malaysia.

At its core, futureK offers a digital-first, fixed-fee healthcare solution that includes unlimited teleconsultations through the DOC2US platform, e-prescriptions with medication access for minor ailments, and healthcare coverage extended to family members. The programme’s seamless digital experience aims to make essential healthcare services more affordable and accessible to the gig workforce—often left behind in traditional employer-based coverage systems.

“Our delivery partners are the heartbeat of our platform, braving all conditions to serve millions of Malaysians daily.” said Saran. “With futureK, we are taking a bold step forward by offering a healthcare solution that is accessible, affordable, and inclusive.”

Three-month pilot for long-term impact

The futureK programme will kick off with a three-month pilot phase involving a selected group of foodpanda delivery riders and their families. During this period, feedback and usage data will be gathered to refine the service model and inform the design of a potential nationwide rollout.

Beyond outpatient consultations, futureK also incorporates digital health education modules that promote preventive care, mental wellbeing, and chronic disease management. These resources are designed to empower riders and their families with the knowledge and tools necessary to maintain long-term health and resilience.

The initiative is part of foodpanda’s broader pandahearts commitment—a social impact platform dedicated to uplifting the welfare of its delivery partners. This new healthcare programme marks a significant extension of that mission, offering more than just short-term benefits by investing in the overall wellbeing of its gig workforce.

Tech-driven model

Built on Heydoc Health’s advanced digital infrastructure, futureK uses cutting-edge technologies including artificial intelligence, blockchain, and smart medication management tools to streamline outpatient care delivery. These innovations not only make healthcare more efficient but also support early intervention and preventive strategies, reducing long-term costs for users.

“Heydoc Health was founded on the belief that technology should close the healthcare access gap, not widen it,” said Dr. Choy. “futureK introduces a new model of outpatient care that is accessible, cost-effective, and aligned with how people live and work today.”

With Malaysia’s gig economy projected to contribute billions to the national GDP, addressing the sector’s health coverage void is becoming increasingly urgent. Many freelancers lack consistent, affordable options for medical care. futureK’s fixed-fee, capitated care approach offers predictability in cost and ease of access, helping riders avoid financial shocks while navigating their health needs.

Dr. Choy praised foodpanda’s leadership, stating, “foodpanda’s role in launching this pilot reflects a thoughtful, people-first approach to supporting the freelance community. It shows that when business leaders prioritize the right focus areas, innovation flourishes.”

As the pilot progresses, all eyes will be on the data and insights it generates—potentially shaping the future of freelance healthcare not just in Malaysia, but across the region. If successful, the futureK model may serve as a benchmark for other sectors grappling with the growing demand for inclusive and equitable access to health services.
