foodpanda Malaysia has officially launched pandasafe, a long-term safety initiative aimed at protecting and empowering delivery partners through a nationwide, integrated safety ecosystem.
The pioneering programme stems from a strategic coalition with Allianz Malaysia Berhad (Allianz Malaysia), Hong Leong Bank, PERKESO, and Hong Leong Yamaha Motor, combining public and private sector expertise to address safety in the gig economy.
The launch, held at foodpanda’s headquarters, was officiated by Transport Minister YB Anthony Loke, who lauded the move as a proactive step in safeguarding gig workers.
“The safety of our delivery partners must be treated as a national priority,” said YB Anthony Loke. “I applaud foodpanda and its partners for stepping up with a long-term, structured programme that goes beyond awareness. pandasafe sets a new benchmark for how companies can take responsibility in making our roads safer for gig workers.”
Commitment to rider wellbeing
Unlike short-term campaigns, pandasafe is designed as a permanent fixture in foodpanda’s operations, integrating safety into daily practices.
“Our delivery partners are the heart of foodpanda,” said Tan Ming Luk, Managing Director of foodpanda Malaysia. “Every safely completed order and every rider who gets home safely is a success. With pandasafe, we’re embedding safety into every aspect of our operations, every day. It’s not a seasonal campaign; it’s a permanent shift in how we operate. This is our commitment to our riders, their families, and the communities we serve.”
The programme leverages education, technology, behavioural science, and financial literacy to instil a lasting culture of safety.
Integrated safety measures
Under pandasafe, delivery partners will have access to a range of targeted initiatives, including:
- Structured rider training on safe riding techniques.
- Telematics tools to monitor and improve riding habits.
- First Response and CPR training from Allianz Malaysia to handle emergencies effectively.
- Social protection education and P-Hailing Safety Induction training in partnership with PERKESO.
- Defensive riding and braking skills sessions supported by Hong Leong Yamaha Motor.
- Financial literacy workshops by Hong Leong Bank to help riders manage income and plan for the future.
These elements are designed to work together, forming a holistic framework that reduces risk while improving the long-term wellbeing of delivery partners nationwide.
Building a culture of safety
Tan stressed that the initiative’s success lies in forging strong collaborations and embedding safety into the company’s culture.
“Safety is not just a policy — it’s a culture,” he said. “And building that culture takes the right partnerships and the willingness to do things differently if it means ensuring our riders get home safely. That’s why this coalition matters.”
By moving beyond traditional awareness campaigns, foodpanda Malaysia aims to set a bold new precedent in the gig economy — one centred on protection, empowerment, and accountability for its growing network of delivery partners.
