Penang-born cancer awareness advocate and runner Lim Shyang Guey, with the backing of the National Cancer Society of Malaysia (NCSM), is set to launch Run for Gold, a 2,200-kilometre run across Peninsular Malaysia. The initiative aims to raise awareness and funds for children battling cancer, while also serving as the Torch Relay component of Relay For Life Malaysia 2026, spreading hope and solidarity across communities along the route.
The ambitious run, which begins on March 28 from the NCSM–MPPP Home of Hope at Rose Avenue in Penang, will take Lim through all 11 states and federal territories, concluding in time for his 67th birthday on June 22, 2026. Covering 25 to 35 kilometres daily with scheduled rest days, the 90-day journey is projected to raise RM600,000 to support childhood cancer awareness and critical services. Funds will specifically benefit NCSM programmes such as Home of Hope, psychosocial care, and survivorship support for young patients and their families across Penang, Perak, and Kuala Lumpur.

“This journey is driven by love, remembrance, and the desire to make a difference,” said Lim. “My wife and I once dreamed of travelling around Peninsular Malaysia on foot. After losing her to cancer, I felt compelled to complete this journey, not just for us, but for the children who are bravely fighting cancer every day.”
Community engagement along the route
Beyond the physical challenge, Run for Gold carries deep personal significance for Lim, who initially planned this journey with his late wife, Joo Lee, who passed away from cancer in August 2024. The initiative draws inspiration from the Gold Ribbon, the universal symbol of childhood cancer awareness, representing the courage, strength, and resilience of young patients and their families.
Lim will stay at homestays, shared accommodations, and with local hosts, enabling him to engage closely with communities along the route. Major towns will host events in collaboration with NCSM, local caregivers, survivors, and supporters to promote cancer awareness and share personal experiences.

“At The National Cancer Society of Malaysia, we are deeply moved by SG Lim’s remarkable commitment to turning personal loss into a powerful force for good,” said Kol. Bersekutu Prof Dr Muralitharan Munisamy, Managing Director of NCSM. “Run for Gold is more than an endurance challenge; it is a journey of hope for children and families affected by cancer. The funds raised will strengthen our childhood cancer support services through every stage of their journey.”
The initiative is supported by local and international corporations including IHH Healthcare, MCIS Life, Kobay Technology Berhad, ASICS, Exabytes, GARMIN, Aurelius Alor Setar, Kuantan and Nilai, and Salam Hospital Terengganu. The public is encouraged to join Lim along the route or contribute through donations to support children with cancer and their families.
