Penang exhibition invites Malaysian artists for 2026 showcase

Penang’s 2026 art exhibition calls Malaysian artists nationwide, showcasing diverse contemporary works while promoting cross-cultural dialogue.

An international art initiative aimed at strengthening cultural exchange will take centre stage in Penang this June, as the Lin Xiang Xiong Art Gallery presents the “Equatorial Art, Nanyang Breeze: An Elite Malaysian Painting Exchange Exhibition 2026.”

Initiated by the gallery and co-organised with the Penang State Museum Board and the Global Chinese Arts & Culture Society, the exhibition will be held at the gallery’s Level 7 Special Exhibition Hall. It marks a significant step in the gallery’s long-term ambition to position Malaysia as a key player in the global art landscape while promoting its philosophy of “Art for Peace.”

Set to feature between 60 and 80 paintings, the exhibition will bring together artists from across Malaysia through a nationwide open call. Participants will represent diverse states, ethnic communities and cultural backgrounds, reflecting the country’s rich artistic heritage shaped by multicultural influences and contemporary interpretations.

The initiative comes amid growing recognition of Malaysia’s creative potential, although consistent international platforms for artistic dialogue have remained limited. By establishing this exhibition in Penang, organisers aim to bridge that gap and elevate Malaysian contemporary art onto a wider global stage.

Art as a catalyst for understanding

Founder of the gallery, Lin Xiang Xiong, emphasised the broader cultural intent behind the exhibition.

“While art may not directly change the world, it has the power to transform the way people understand one another. Through visual language and aesthetic experience, art transcends the boundaries of language, culture, and background, fostering deeper resonance and meaningful communication.”

He added that “‘Art for Peace’ is not merely a slogan, but a sustained cultural practice. ‘Equatorial Art, Nanyang Breeze’ is not only a painting exchange exhibition, but a tangible expression of this cultural vision, one that invites artists, the public, and cultural institutions to participate in shaping an open, evolving, and future-oriented artistic ecosystem.”

The exhibition also underscores the importance of institutional collaboration in expanding public engagement and professional standards. Organisers believe that partnerships across cultural bodies will help position Penang as a regional hub for artistic exchange.

Submissions for the exhibition are currently open, with a deadline set for April 7, 2026. Selected artists will be announced later in April, followed by the submission of physical artworks in May ahead of the exhibition launch.

Artists interested in participating can register via the official form.
