Sutra Foundation presents Bharatanatyam showcase featuring Pritam Das

Sutra Foundation will present Anurāgāvali: Dance of Longing, a two-night Bharatanatyam performance featuring acclaimed Indian dancer Pritam Das at Sutra House on Aug. 8 and 9, highlighting the enduring appeal of one of India’s oldest classical dance traditions.

The performances, scheduled to begin at 8pm on both evenings, will take place at the foundation’s intimate venue in Kuala Lumpur. Admission will be by minimum donation, allowing audiences to experience a performance centred on classical storytelling, devotion and emotional expression.

Born in Kolkata, Pritam has emerged as one of the rising names in Bharatanatyam, earning recognition for his expressive stage presence and distinctive artistic style. He is a three-time recipient of the Best Dancer Award presented by the historic Music Academy in Chennai and is currently training under acclaimed Bharatanatyam exponent Guru Rama Vaidyanathan.

Celebrating classical artistry through intimate performances

According to Sutra Foundation, Anurāgāvali: Dance of Longing explores themes of longing and devotion through Bharatanatyam, a classical Indian dance form known for combining intricate footwork, expressive gestures and narrative storytelling.

The foundation described Pritam as an artist whose performances are characterised by emotional intensity, authenticity and the ability to evoke the rasas — the aesthetic emotions central to Indian classical performance traditions.

His Kuala Lumpur appearance is expected to offer audiences an opportunity to witness how Bharatanatyam continues to evolve while remaining rooted in centuries-old artistic and cultural traditions.

Promoting appreciation of Indian classical dance

The showcase reflects Sutra Foundation’s ongoing efforts to promote Indian classical performing arts in Malaysia by bringing internationally recognised practitioners to local audiences.

Beyond entertainment, the performances aim to foster greater appreciation of Bharatanatyam’s artistic heritage and its continued relevance in contemporary cultural expression.
