Penang orders halt to rail track project

The Penang Government has issued a stop-work order on the Electrified Double Track Project (EDTP) from Ipoh to Padang Besar effective immediately.

Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng said the pre-emptive move was necessary to prevent major floods on the mainland as both the Housing and Local Government Minister Datuk Chor Chee Heung and Kedah Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Azizan Abdul Razak had said the recent floods in Kedah were possibly due to the project.

He said the move was necessary to ensure that Penang did not suffer the same fate as Kedah.
