On April 18, the Penang state govt in conjunction with Earth Day 2010 launched a coastal cleanup campaign at the Gurney drive.
More than 2000 Penangnites from all walks of life, registered for the cleanup exercise. Young and old alike, scarcificed their Sunday morning to rid the tourist spot of trash and rubbih.
Simultaneously, two other location, tourist spots in Tanjong Bungah and Batu Ferringhi also participate in the cleanup event.
USM is helping to compile the data of trash collected. At the end of the day, more than 6.4 tons of trash and rubbish were cleared from the the rocky Gurney drive beach.
The rubbish collected comprised of 48,000 items. Among the items collected were a refrigerator, a tractor tyre, 51 condoms, 128 diapers, 222 tampons and 53 syringes !
