A local cycling club, G Club Penang Cyclists holds a ‘Ride of Silence’ event as a sign of respect for cyclists who were injured or killed in road accidents.
Jason Choong, the event organizing chairman said the event aimed to raise awareness among other road users and the authorities that cyclists are also legal users of roads.
About 350 cyclists from all over Penang came to support the call despite heavy downpour before the event held at Esplanade, Penang.
The ‘Ride of Silence’ which started eight years ago in Dallas, in the United States and since then has expanded to more than 18 countries.
It is held every third Wednesday of May.
Participants must wear protective gear, with lights on their bicycles and obey traffic rules.
The 10km-ride started at 9.30pm at the Esplanade and ended at Paragon, Gurney Drive.
