The leader of a gang called “Geng 08” was killed in a shootout with police early today in Paya Terubung.
Penang CID chief SAC II Zahruddin Abdullah said police, acting on a tip-off, caught up with the 52-year-old man who was driving in Jalan Kampung Melayu at 2.30am and followed his movement.
Upon arriving at a traffic light at Green Garden flat, however, the man became aware of their presence and sped off towards Jalan Paya Terubong.
“In the chase, he shoved the police car aside before stopping and climbing out of his car.
He then ran towards a durian farm while shooting at the police,” he said.
Zahruddin said police had returned fire, killing him on the spot.
“Investigation shows that the Geng 08 leader was from George Town and was wanted by police for a spate of crime around Air Itam,” he said.
