RM50,000 won by Damansara Jaya residents

The Damansara Jaya Residents and Owners Association (DJROA) grabbed the Petaling Jaya Sustainable Community Premier Award 2010/2011 for the third time in the last 10 years. This annual contest is for best outstanding achievements and initiatives in promoting sustainable communities in Petaling Jaya.

Mentri Besar of Selangor Abdul Khalid Ibrahim presented the awards to all the winners of the contest organised by Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) at the ballroom of One World Hotel in Petaling Jaya recently.

“We have a good batch of committees who worked very hard to serve the community. Hard work and perseverance in serving the people helped us win the award,” said DJROA chairman Yew Cheng Hoe who was beaming with delight when the result was announced.

The award carried a RM50,000 development grant, a trophy and a certificate.

“We thank the residents of Damansara Jaya for actively participating in our events and activities…that’s the success story.

“Of course we are happy to win again. In the 10 years that we have taken part in the competition, we won four times; thrice we emerged as champions in 2001, 2009 and now 2011 and won second placing in 2004,” added the 69-year-old former Thomas Cup single player who was in the 1967 Thomas Cup squad where Malaysia won 6-3 against Indonesia in the finals.

On the RM50,000 monetary grant, he said it would be ploughed back on sustainable community projects that will bring benefits to the residents.

The Rukun Tetangga SS2B won second placing with a RM25,000 development grant, trophy and certificate and the third placing was won by Persatuan Penduduk Taman Mayang Jaya with RM10,000 development grant, trophy and certificate.

Five other neighbourhoods won the Petaling Jaya Sustainable Community Initiative Award 2010/2011 each in their respective category. Each of the award carried a RM3,000 development grant, a trophy and a certificate.

The competition first introduced in 2000 was opened to Residents Associations (RA), Rukun Tetangga (RT) and Village Safety and Development Committees (JKKK) in Petaling Jaya.

“The award is one of the initiatives of MBPJ to give recognition to the development of Petaling Jaya community in creating a neigbourhood that is sustainable, prosperous, safe and green in line with the principles of Local Agenda 21 Petaling Jaya,” said Petaling Jaya city mayor Datuk Bandar Dato’ Mohamad Roslan Sakiman.

“For this year’s award, we have made careful and comprehensive observations in terms of safety, environmental protection, cleanliness and social integration which have become the neighbourhood community’s priorities in Petaling Jaya.

“The significant impact of this award has had positive effects on the recycling programs by the community, green zones and utilities adoption scheme, river rehabilitation program, active participation in Town Hall Meetings and major festival celebrations managed by the main community.”
