Embassy and Consulate General to monitor quake situation in Indonesia

The Malaysian Embassy in Jakarta and Consulate General in Medan have been instructed to monitor developments in relation to Malaysian students and citizens in both locations following the 7.1 Richter earthquake in Aceh, Indonesia, yesterday morning.

A Foreign Affairs Ministry statement said early reports from the embassy in Jakarta informed that all 206 and 1,620 Malaysian students in Aceh and Medan respectively were safe.

The 1.36 am quake’s centre was in the ocean, 419km South West of Meulaboh, Aceh and tremors were felt up to Medan, South Sumatera.

The Tsunami warning which was issued immediately after, by Indonesia’s Agency for Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics, was cancelled in the evening.
