The army seized various types of firecrackers and fireworks worth about RM250,000 including taxes in a raid at an illegal jetty in Terusan near Rantau Panjang, on Sunday.
Eighth Infantry Brigade commander, Brig-Gen Datuk Mohamad Zaki Hamzah said in the 1.30am raid, two men believed to be involved in smuggling the prohibited goods managed to escape.
“The firecrackers and fireworks were kept in 36 large boxes and each estimated to be worth more than RM2,400,” he told reporters, yesterday.
Mohamad Zaki said a group of army officers and soldiers who were patrolling the area saw a group of men behaving suspiciously on the banks of the Golok River before approaching them.
On inspecting the boxes, they found these to contain various types of firecrackers and fireworks believed to be smuggled from a neighbouring country.
He said the seized goods would be handed over to the Kelantan Anti-Smuggling Unit for further action.
