Sekolah Menengah Convent Bukit Nanas (CBN) administration and curriculum senior assistant Chee Poh Kiem said her school’s 2011 PMR GPS at 1.52 was better than 1.53 recorded last year.

“There were 81 candidates who obtained grade A in all subjects compared to 78 last year while the passing rate for all subjects except Geography was 100 per cent.

Asked on the medium used in the teaching and learning of science and mathematics, Chee said it was the school’s policy to give priority to English.

“The policy was made as it was the demand of parents that their children be taught in English but explanation was also provided in Bahasa Malaysia for students not fluent in English,” she said.

Chee said it was not easy to improve the GPS as the school had to ensure that all requirements by the teaching team were fulfilled to help assist improve student performance.

“The school is also required to conduct various intensive or suplementary classes to guide students towards better results.” she said.

Meanwhile, the principal of SMK Wangsa Melawati, Hasniah Ali, said the GPS in her school improved from 2.41 to 2.31 points.

“The number of students with straight As increased from 19 to 21 students and there were 241 PMR candidates this year compared to 222 last year.

SMK Seksyen 5 Wangsa Maju principal Habehah Abdul Kudus said the GPS at her school improved from 2.12 to 2.08 points.

She said teaching and learning of Mathematics and Science in her school was carried out based on the students language comptencies.
