The Transport Workers Union (TWU) of Peninsular Malaysia today proposed that only one stage bus company be allowed to operate in an area to avoid stiff competition among them.
Its secretary-general Zainal Rampak said stiff competition among bus companies operating in the same area would cause them to suffer losses, thus were unable to bear the operating costs including maintenance of the buses.
“For example, there are four bus companies serving the Klang Valley routes. In this matter, the Public Land Transport Commission (SPAD) should study again the issuing of bus permits for an area,” he said when contacted, yesterday.
Zainal also suggested that the government remove taxes such as on diesel and spare parts, and road tax to enable bus operators to reduce their financial constraints so that they could continue providing services, especially in the rural areas.
On the RM400 million fund approved by the government so assist stage bus operators, Zainal said he welcomed it and hoped the operators would use it well to provide efficient services to the people in their interest.
