The Malaysian Ladies Golf Association (Malga) has to date, trained 1,500 schoolgirls under its ‘Golf For Girls’ programme to create future champions.
Executive director Rabe’ahtul A. Abbas said primary schoolgirls, mostly from Kedah, Malacca, Negeri Sembilan, Sabah and Sarawak, had benefited from the programme since 2006.
“Of the 1,500 young golfers we have trained, we are currently grooming some to represent Malaysia in future tournaments, locally and internationally,” she told reporters after attending a prize-giving ceremony for winners of the ‘DRB HICOM – MALGA Charity Golf’ tournament yesterday.
Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin is the tournament patron. Rabe’ahtul said Malaysian amateur golfer Kelly Tan, who secured a bronze medal in golf under the women’s category at the 26th SEA Games, regularly attended the Malga national training camps.
She said Tan was currently, one of the association’s top players. Earlier, Malga president Tunku Puteri Jawahir Tuanku Ja’afar received a total sponsorship of RM180,000, including from DRB-HICOM, Majlis Sukan Negara and Affin Bank Berhad, for the development of the ‘Golf For Girls’ programme.
