A lecturer at a public institution of higher learning is the latest victim to die from dengue fever this year.
Health Director-General Datuk Seri Dr Hasan Abdul Rahman said the death of the 42-year-old lecturer brought the dengue death toll to 34 since January to Dec 10 this year.
“From checks conducted surrounding the lecturer’s residence, there were 20 Aedes breeding grounds,” he said in a statement issued yesterday.
Dr Hasan said a total of 486 cases of dengue fever were reported for the week between Dec 4 and 10, an increase of 128 cases from the previous week, and the highest weekly cases ever recorded since February this year.
He said that since October, there was an increasing trend in the number of weekly dengue cases recorded, especially in Perak, Kedah, Penang, Selangor and Kuala Lumpur.
In Melaka, Johor and Terengganu, the increase was recorded since four weeks ago, he added.
Dr Hasan said that three dengue hotspots had been identified this week and they were at the Taman Gembira Flats and Vista Angkasa, both in Klang Lama, and the Taman Mulia People’s Housing Project in Cheras.
