Some 1.2mil compasionate aid has been been channeled to 2,544 flood victims in Kelantan and Terengganu, Dewan Negara was told today.
Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Liew Vui Keong said RM553,000 was for 1,106 flood victims in Kelantan while the remaining RM719,000 was for 1,438 families in Terengganu.
“In fact, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Nazri Aziz is presently giving compassionate aid to flood victims in the two states,” he said when replying to a question by Senator Boon Som Inong on government spending to help flood victims.
Liew said the compassionate aid via the National Disaster Aid Trust Fund (KWABBN) was to reduce the burden of victims and not as payment for damages or compensation.
“The government is concerned with problems faced by the people due to disasters. The aid is channeled transparently regardless of race, religion and political background of the victims.”
The National Security Council (MKN) has also created guidelines on compassionate aid by setting a uniform rate, application processing procedures and responsibilities of agencies involved so that aid could be channeled fast.
“This aid to victims does not include aid in the form of goods from other agencies such as Social Welfare Department and Rural and Regional Development Ministry,” he added.
