Rakan Muda Resource Centres (PSRM) have been well-received by youths since it was set up nationwide last year, Youth and Sports Department’s Rakan Muda Development Division deputy director-general Wasitah Mohd Yusof said yesterday.
She said the 250 PSRM were scattered throughout the country, including 27 implemented under the High-Speed Broadband Project (BSBB) through a collaboration between the Youth and Sports Ministry, Telekom Malaysia and the Information Communication and Culture Ministry.
When met by reporters after a handing over ceremony of the Perlis PSRM to the Perlis Youth and Sports Department today, she said the telecommunications company had spent RM5 million on the cyber centres.
Wasitah said the centres had a positive impact on youths as it could be utilised to enhance their information communication technology (ICT) skills and learning.
To ensure the PSRM was not misused, she said they had appointed supervisors to monitor users in addition to other methods introduced by TM to prevent users from surfing inappropriate websites.
She said TM’s contribution towards the PSRM was a result of cooperation since 2008, whereby the centres were completed in September last year and handed over between Nov 29 and Dec 16.
The Perlis PSRM worth RM200,000 located in the Youth and Sports Complex on Jalan Hospital, here, is the 22nd centre handed over by TM to the department where users can enjoy facilities for free.
Wasitah hoped youths would make good use of the centres to obtain information, especially students.
Meanwhile, Perlis Youth and Sports Department director Abdul Haris Ishak said they hoped to curb youth involvement in vice activities with the presence of the PSRM.
He also said the Rakan Muda Club should organise more activities for youths which would indirectly promote the cyber centre that is equipped with 10 computers.
