Over 200 products from the 1Malaysia People’s Shop (KR1M) are being tested for compliance with safety and quality standards, said Deputy Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Minister Tan Lian Hoe.
She said the products would be evaluated by the ministry’s special monitoring unit to ensure that they were safe for public consumption.
“This is to rebut allegations made by certain quarters who cast aspersion on the quality and safety of KR1M products,” he said when answering a supplementary question from Senator Yeow Chai Thiam at the Dewan Negara yesterday.
Tan said the special monitoring unit and the Health Ministry would make random tests on food products sold in KR1M shops throughout the country.
To a proposal from Senator Mumtaz Md Nawi for the promulgation of a law governing quality of food in the market, Tan said the ministry enforced the Consumer Protection Act 1999 which empowered the minister to withdraw distribution of harmful products.
She said as the Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Ministry was coordinating the KR1M, it would ensure products sold in the shops meet the required quality and standards.
