The National Cancer Council (Makna) held a celebration to fete and honour its top three volunteers at Taman Titiwangsa, yesterday.
Max Chong Kam Kok,42, from Ipoh, Perak and cancer survivors Azlina Abdullah,57 from Taiping, Perak and Norizan Yahya,54 from Kangar, Perlis each received the Exemplary Volunteer Award at the event themed “Volunteers – A Perfect Puzzle Put Together”.
“I’ve tirelessly attended to voluntary work shuttling between Cancer Support Groups at the Taiping, Ipoh, Kuala Kangsar, Kulim, Alor Setar and Sungai Petani Hospitals.
“I’ve also regularly arranged for free breast prosthesis and arranged Qi Gong practice with volunteer Lim Sow Eng at the Taiping Lake Gardens,” said Azlina.
Max, Azlina and Norizan, recipients of the Volunteer Leadership Award last year, are highly regarded for their continuous commitment and serve as good role models for the other volunteers.
“Many of us are fortunate that we are still able to earn our livelihood with our jobs, but there are a whole lot out there who are suffering from cancer and are not as fortunate as us,” said MAKNA president Mohd Farid Ariffin at the event.
“Our volunteers pool their strength and put their differences aside to make life better for various communities and they work for a better world without expecting anything in return,” he added.
Meanwhile, MAKNA senior volunteer coordinator Fadzilah Wan said they coached the volunteers to help them discover what they truly wanted to do and in the process determined the necessary action needed to achieve the same.
Students from Universiti Teknologi Mara Shah Alam, Faculty of Communication and Media Studies donated RM19,000 to MAKNA during the event.
