Port Dickson lass designs best Necklace and Earring

The winners of the 2^nd MIJF Jewellery Design Awards 2012 Competition in the four categories (ring, earring, necklace, and bracelet/brooch) were announced by event and contest organiser Elite Expo recently.

The four winning designs will be manufactured into masterpieces by Amee Philips Jewellery and displayed at Malaysia’s largest jewellery fair, the 9th Malaysia International Jewellery Fair (MIJF) 2012, which opens on July 19-22 at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC).

An award presentation ceremony will be held on July 22 at 3.00 pm in KLCC for the four winners and finalists.

The regional jewellery designs competition which officially started from November last year and closed on April this year received overwhelming response from more than 200 students of arts and designs school from Thailand, China, India, Indonesia, Taiwan, Hong Kong, South Korea, Singapore, Malaysia and other countries in Asia.

The winning designs  were selected by the competition judges based on criteria such as originality, creativity, marketability and compliance of the design to the given theme of “Natural of Earth”.

Tang Yuk Ying, a 23-year old jewellery design and technology student at Hong Kong Institute of Vocational Education won the first place in the Ring category.

Two Malaysians who study jewellery design at Chin Jewellery Art Centre in Kuala Lumpur won in the other three categories. They were Chong Jian Fei, 23, from Selangor who won in the Bangle/Brooch category while Gan Soek Lan, 25, from Port Dickson won outstandingly in both the Necklace and Earring categories.

During the award presentation ceremony, a Most Outstanding Award will be presented to one of the top four placed-winners who receive the most number of votes from visitors to the four-day exhibition.

The award winner will receive a scholarship worth RM12,000 for a 9-week gemmology course sponsored by GIA Thailand.

The competition judges panel comprised of several major industry players in global jewellery market, including Gemmological Institute of America’s (GIA) jewellery manufacturing arts programme director Mark B. Mann; Amee Philips Jewellery co-founder, artist, entrepreneur and master craftsman Amee Philips; Federation of Goldsmiths and Jewellers Associations of Malaysia president and Tomei Consolidated group managing director Ng Yih Pyng and MIJF founder and Elite Expo CEO Johnson Lim.
