Families of the dead need only make one report in order to obtain a burial permit and a death certificate.
In the past, two reports were needed, one to confirm the death, namely from the police station in order to get a burial permit and the National Registration Department (NRD) for a death certificate.
According to National Registration Department public relations officer Jainisah Mohd Noor the new procedure was introduced after being approved by the Home Minister under Section 39 (h) Birth and Death Registration Act 1957 (Act 299).
She said through the new procedure the informer or heir of a dead person could lodge a report at the closest police station, hospital or City Hall by using a new death registration form/burial permit JPN LM02 (Pin.1/11).
She said as soon as a death report was received, the informer or heir would be given a copy of the death register and burial permit.
“It is hoped this step can reduce bureaucracy since the heir of a dead person need only lodge one report to get two documents simultaneously,” she said in a statement.
She said the data would also automatically boost the sharing of information between NRD and other agencies, especially the Election Commission, for their online voter register data through the Agency Link Up System.
