Human trafficking and immigrant smuggling hits 714 cases

A total of 714 cases of trafficking in persons and smuggling of migrants has been reported up to Nov 22.

This was acknowledged at a meeting of the Anti-trafficking in Persons and Anti-smuggling of Migrants Council (MAPO) on Nov 24 chaired by Home Ministry deputy secretary-general Abdul Rahim Mohd Radzi in Putrajaya.

The MAPO secretariat, in a statement here today, said that of the 714 cases, 367 have been charged in court, 230 were on trial, 59 have been disposed of (completed) and 58 convicted.

On enforcement, the statement said that as at Oct 31 there had been 535 arrests involving 374 cases.

Victims who have been rescued and placed under protection order and in shelter homes as at Oct 31 totalled 867, comprising 257 men, 492 women and 118 children, it said.
