Hindraf: End Waytha Moorthy’s exile

PENANG – Hindraf chairperson P Waytha Moorthy has announced his intention of returning to Malaysia on August 1, 2012 after spending more than 4 and a half years in exile in United Kingdom.

After registering the case at the Queen’s Bench Division, High Court of Justice London the Hindraf chairperson P Waytha Moorthy has announced his intention of returning to Malaysia on August 1, 2012 after more than 4 and a half years in exile in the United Kingdom.

This exile was imposed on Waytha Moorthy by the Malaysian authorities.

His Malaysian passport was withdrawn by the UK Border Agency on April 21, 2008 at the Gatwick Airport, UK, on instruction from the Malaysian authorities by a letter dated March 17, 2008.

He has since utilised the time in exile to make the necessary preparations for the historic suit against the British government on behalf of all the marginalized and poor Indians in Malaysia for the role of the British government in their current depressed and marginalized state in the Malaysia.

Now that the case has been registered on July 2, 2012, he is ready to return to Malaysia to continue his human rights work from within the country.

Waytha Moorthy plans to be on Malaysian soil on August 1st 2012.

He would like to return home with dignity and full rights as a citizen of this country.

Therefore we demand that the Malaysian High Commission in London immediately issue him a passport. Since it was the former Prime Minister Abdullah Badawi and the then Home Minister who made the decision on this we call upon the current Home Minister Hishammuddin Hussein to revisit this decision to withhold Waytha Moorthy’s passport and to instruct the competent and relevant Foreign Ministry officials to immediately issue him a new passport.

Waytha Moorthy plans to be in Malaysia with or without his passport. It will save all the embarrassment and problems associated with this to all concerned, if the government of Malaysia will issue him a passport in the amicable manner that we request.

This is press statement by Hindraf national advisor, N Ganesan
