A press conference to announce the upcoming Voters Awareness Convention in Johor Bahru was held recently.
The convention, to be held in Cathay Restaurant, Taman Molek was organised by a coalition of civil society groups led by the Johor Action Group (JAPA) and supported by the Bersih 2.0 steering committee.
According to co-chairman of Bersih 3.0 Johor Bahru Thomas Fann, there are three objectives to the convention. The objectives are:
1) To inspire – that is to keep the fire for electoral reform burning
2) To inform those attending of the latest changes to the election rules.
3) To train in one sitting more than a thousand people to serve as Polling Agent, Counting Agent and Poll Agent (PACABA) to ensure a clean and fair election. The training will be in the form of short skits, using songs and videos so that people can retain the message.
Fann said that there are many ways to strengthen our democracy.
Firstly, is to encourage one hundred percent voter turnout for the election.
Second way is to register one hundred percent of all eligible voters.
Third way to strengthen democracy is to report any discrepancy and violation.
The convention, which is on August 5, 2012, will be from 9.00 am to 4.00 pm, with seven speakers, among them are Ambiga, Marina Chin, Wong Chin Huat and Hishamudin Rais.
