The “Penang in Asia” lecture series, organised by Penang Institute on December 9th at MPPP Town Hall, Padang Kota Lama will feature some notable names such as the 1996 Nobel Prize winner for Economic Sciences, Professor Sir James Alexander Mirrlees.
Prof. Mirrlees, who has taught in Cambridge and Oxford shared the 1996 Nobel Prize for Economics with William Vickrey for their fundamental contributions to the economic theory of incentives under asymmetric information.
Through this lecture series, Penang Institure poised to bring together renowned scholars, public intellectuals and thinkers from diverse fields to Penang to speak on issues relevant to the state in its historic role as the cultural, intellectual and economic centre of Asia.
The Penang Institute, formerly known as the Socio-Economic and Environmental Research Institute (SERI), was established in 1997 as an independent non-profit research institute that focuses on maintaining high growth in Penang that is socially inclusive and environmentally sustainable.
Penang CM, Lim Guan Eng will also take the centre stage in a panel discussion titled “Reflections on how to Improve Policymaking Process in Malaysia”with the with opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and PAS Vice President Datuk Hj. Husam Hj. Musa as the panelist.
The general public also will be given an opportunity to participate in an open discussion on Prof. Mirrlees’ lecture titled “What is to be done in Malaysia?” The discussion will be moderated by Dr. Muhammed Abdul Khalid.
The two speakers who will be commenting in the open discussion are Prof. Woo Wing Thye and Professor Emeritus Datuk Dr Mohamed.
The lectures final panel discussion titled The Forthcoming Transformation of the Global Economy and Lessons of Economic Reform for Asia will be moderated by political scientist, Dr. Bridget Welsh. The panelists for this discussion are Prof. Mirrlees, Prof. Iwan Jaya Azis, Prof. Wen Hai and Prof. Warwick McKibbin
