Health Ministry looking for ways to promote health

The Health Ministry will discuss with restaurant associations, food producers and food suppliers on the most effective way to make the healthy lifestyle campaign in the country a success.

Its minister Liow Tiong Lai said the topic would focus especially on reduction of sugar, salt and fat in the production of food, without compromising on the quality and price.

“We will meet with these parties to ensure they understand the government policy; we will see what incentive we can give them and hear their views on how we can work with them to provide healthier food,” he told reporters after launching the 3rd Asia Pacific Conference On Public Health here today.

Liow said the ministry was stressing on the three food combinations in the campaign as they were among the elements that contributed largely to non-communicable diseases such as high blood pressure, diabetes and heart diseases.

Liow said food operators and suppliers would also be required to display the nutritional content on food packages.

“We want to educate the public to scrutinise and fully understand the contents on the label.

“We also want to educate housewives to buy food according to the food pyramid system,” he said, pointing out that the people should also be responsible towards their own health and not take non-communicable diseases lightly.
