The lackadaisical attitude of parents was a major factor which contributed to nearly 1,200 students playing truant in the first 10 months of the year in Pahang.

State education director Yahya Zainal Abidin said the number represented 0.46 per cent of the 250,000 students in Pahang.

Speaking to reporters at the Pahang Education Department Innovation programme yesterday, he said various efforts were undertaken to ensure students attended school regularly.

He said these included counselling and motivation, adding that every district had its anti-truancy squad.

The squad comprised parent-teacher association members, police and members of the village development and security commitee.
