The RM6.5 billion West Coast Expressway (LPB), which will connect Banting, Selangor to Taiping, Perak, will see six toll plazas be built in Selangor.
At the Selangor state assembly sitting today, Hassan Ali (PAS-Gombak Setia), the state exco member in charge of infrastructure and public facilities, revealed that the planned E28 highway will have a total of 16 toll plazas, six of which will be built in yet to be determined locations in Selangor.
He added that the cost of building the Selangor portion of the highway is RM3.5bil, while the total construction cost stands at RM6.5bil.
He was asked by Ng Suee Lim (DAP-Sekinchan) about the role of the state government in this project, the area of land that will be affected and how many toll plazas will be built.
Hassan said the project is undertaken by the Malaysia Highway Board (Lembaga Lebuhraya Malaysia, or LLB) and its concessionaire, while the state is permanent members of the technical committee. The LLB comes under the purview of the Federal Government.
“We holds meeting and remind them of their responsibility towards the environment in building the highway,” said Hasan.
“We want them to take care of the forest reserve and rivers so that we will have our forest intact once the highway is completed,” he added.
He said the total area of land acquired for the project is 1,523 acres while 77.8 acres belongs to the state.
The stretch of road from Tanjung Karang to the Selangor–Perak border will be upgraded.
The West Coast Expressway was mooted in 2008 and was initially scheduled to be completed by 2012.
