China’s most revered director, Zhang Yimou choreographed an enthralling performance titled “Impression-Liu Sanjie” in a recently organised “China Cultural Festival” at the Esplanade.
The Penang State Tourism, Development and Culture department organised this event to foster bilateral relations between Malaysia and China especially through the tourism industry and to showcase China’s cultural diversity.
“Impression-Liu Sanjie” is a story which originates from the Zhuang people, the largest minority group in China. The story is about a woman called Liu Sanjie, which means “third sister”.
The legend tells the tale of Liu Sanjie who from very tender age had a voice so beautiful that it could raise the dead. The story became extremely popular that in 1960 a movie was released.
Zhang Yimou, a Chinese film director, producer, writer and actor is famous for depicting the resilience of the Chinese people in the face of hardship and diversity.
Other performances included dances from the Zhuang tribe which depict their enthusiasm and reverence for nature.
The two groups which gave a gripping performance for the two nights of the festival were from Xiamen (Minnan) Tourism Culture & Industry Company Limited and Industry Company Limited and Guangxi Qingzhou cultural troupe.
Penang Chief Minister, Lim Guan Eng foresees the event becoming another annual event similar to the renowned Bon Odori Festival which managed to capture an audience of approximately 70,000 last July.
