Eleven local councils in Selangor still owe their previous solid waste management contractor Alam Flora Sdn Bhd a total of RM21.262 million, the Selangor State Assembly heard today.
Apart from the Hulu Selangor District Council (MDHS), all local councils previously engaged Alam Flora for solid waste management and public sanitation.
The state exco member for local housing and government, Ronnie Liu, told Komunitikini that the arrears accumulated because Alam Flora was said to have not filed its claims in order.
“If they (Alam Flora) submit their claims and local councils find it suspicious, it will be rejected and they will be asked to refile (the claims),” he explained.
Besides that, he claimed Alam Flora also owes various local councils an amount of money since 1990s as the company had acquired local council lorries and equipment without paying for them.
“They must seriously start to pay back local councils for what they had taken,” he said.
Meanwhile at the state assembly sitting, Liu (DAP-Pandamaran) told Yap Ee Wah (BN-Sg Pelek) that local councils have received fewer complaints about rubbish collection since taking over solid waste collection duties from Alam Flora in October.
He said the Klang Municipal Council (MPK) has increased its rubbish collection frequency from thrice to four times weekly; whereas in commercial areas, it has been increased to twice a day.
He added that state government, through local councils, has absorbed all Alam Flora subcontractors for an interim period until December 31.
“Upon the end of the period, the underperforming subcontractors will be replaced by new ones through open tender,” he said.
On whether or not the state government had dismissed Alam Flora, Liu said it was done by Alam Flora itself.
