The Terengganu Social Welfare Department has sent flood relief supplies to 138 forward bases, including in Pulau Perhentian and Pulau Redang, in preparation for the coming floods.
Its director, Zuhami Omar said, RM700,000 worth of necessity items such as rice, sardines, sugar, tea, beverages, powdered milk and dried fish were distributed several weeks ago.
He said most of the bases received two weeks’ worth of supplies, while the two islands were given supplies to last a month.
In this context, Zuhami said annual leave for over 500 employees of the department will be frozen for the monsoon and flood season in Terengganu.
Last year the department had managed more than 12,000 flood victims and they were prepared should the number increase this year, he added.
