The Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) has set up a Disaster Relief Committee as a preparation to face possible floods in the city.
Its deputy director-general, Amin Nordin Abdul Aziz, said the committee comprised members of the Royal Malaysian Police, Civil Defence Department, Social Welfare Department, Tenaga Nasional Berhad, Malaysian Red Crescent Society and Alam Flora Sdn Bhd.
“The committee’s operation room, which will be fully operational this month, is supervised by DBKL Enforcement Department in Jalan Tun Razak and they will also conduct operations to help flood victims,” he told Bernama yesterday.
Mohd Amin, who also expressed confidence that the city would not be inundated by major floods like Thailand, Myanmar and Cambodia, said that DBKL had made thorough preparation, including by lining-up a 40-member rescue squad, 40-member traffic squad and 48-member emergency squad.
“Our rescue squad had also undergone trainings and courses in Singapore an Netherland, as well as paramedical courses in Canada,” he said.
Mohd Amin said the traffic squad would monitor the situation in the city from time to time, while the emergency squad would be responsible for clearing fallen trees and cleaning works.
Eighty motor-vehicles, including boats and lorries, as well as 14 DBKL halls and 21 schools which could facilitate about 12,000 people, had been prepared for the operation, he said.
He said DBKL would also put up flood warning signboards in several locations, including Kampung Baru, Jalan Tun Razak, Jalan Masjid India, Jalan Dang Wangi and Dataran Merdeka.
